This disk is placed in the Public Domain and distributed under the Shareware
concept. It is available for anyone to try without obligation. If you find
these programs useful, you are asked to register your use of them. All
commercial users MUST register.
ALL PROGRAMS ON THIS DISK ARE TOTALLY MENU DRIVEN FOR EASE OF USE WITHOUT THE
NEED FOR SEPARATE INSTRUCTIONS. The assumption is made, however, that the user
of the Smith Chart program is already familiar with impedance matching
networks, and that the user of the propagation programs is familiar with the
associated terms. A complete manual will be furnished to all who register.
For the registration fee of $15.00 you will receive a disk with the latest
version of all the programs, complete documentation for those who desire
further information, and a copy of the source code for those who wish to modify
the programs for their own applications.
SCHART is a Smith Chart impedance matching program. It is a new IBM version of
an 8-year old program originally written for the HP-9830 then the Commodore-64.
Given a starting or "load" impedance, the program calculates new input
impedances for any combination of passive matching elements you choose.
Outputs are listed in tabular form with resistive and reactive values given for
each frequency of operation.
For those wishing to graphically analyze the impedances as a function of
frequency, a graphics option is included which draws a Smith Chart in high
resolution graphics and plots the impedances. The graphics option was written
in BASICA and will run on any computer which can run graphics from BASIC. On
most computers this means you are using the "IBM color card" or "CGA"
equivalent with a monochrome composite video monitor or an RGB monitor. You
cannot do compiled BASIC graphics on a TTL monitor with a monochrome text card.
If you can't run the graphics, select the proper option on the first menu, and
you can still use the program with all its equations; you just won't be able to
plot a Smith Chart on your screen.
I originally developed the program on a Zenith 158, then slightly modified it
for compatibility with a variety of machines. I have personally used it on
Zenith, IBM PC-XT, Compaq, and PC's Limited Turbo PC computers.
Text dumps to printer should work with any printer. If you desire high
resolution graphics screen dumps, it will be necessary to run the appropriate
file for your hardware configuration from DOS before running SCHART. On an IBM
or Compaq this will most likely be GRAPHICS.COM. To enable high resolution
dumps to my Panasonic (Epson compatible) printer from my Zenith 158 computer, I
run PSCMX80.COM. I have personally used it successfully with IBM, Panasonic,
Epson, and Gemini printers.
The HFPROP program will predict expected ground-wave communications ranges (in
miles) from 3.5 to 50 MHz based upon inputs of frequency, transmitter power,
receiver sensitivity, antenna parameters, and type of terrain. Data are based
upon the classical "Bell Labs Curves" (declassified after WW2).
The VHFPROP program predicts expected communications ranges (in nautical and
statute miles) from 100 MHz to 3.5 GHz based upon inputs of frequency,
transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, and antenna parameters. Data are
included for ground-to-ground, ground-to-air, and air-to-air applications plus
free-space line-of-sight information useful for satellite communications
predictions. Data are based upon propagation curves found in ESSA TECHNICAL
REPORT ERL 111-ITS 79 (available from Government printing offices).
Type SCHART <return> to run the Smith Chart program.
Type VHFPROP <return> to run the VHF Propagation program.
Type HFPROP <return> to run the HF Propagation program.
Remember, a disk with the latest versions of these programs, source code, and
complete documentation are available for a registration fee of $15.00.
